Prepare for a glamorous fashion showdown! The Oscars this year promise to be a fascinating fashion showdown between strong pantsuits and timeless ball dresses.
Celebrity stylist Jennifer Austin foresees a fusion of tradition and daring statements. She has dressed stars such as Angela Bassett and Danielle Brooks (nominated for this year’s Oscars!). “The dramatic ballgowns are a sure thing,” notes Austin, “but I also see a lot of pantsuits making a powerful entrance.”
There has been a wide range of fashion during awards season, from billowing dresses to daringly transparent ensembles. The director of the Elle UK website, Katie O’Malley, describes it as a return to “real Hollywood glamour” with “big silhouettes, luxurious textures, and pops of colour.” Imagine flowing trains, statement shawls, and a hint of bygone grandeur.
Nominees for Best Actress, such as Sandra Huller, Emma Stone, Lily Gladstone, and Carey Mulligan, are certain to draw attention. O’Malley draws attention to Stone’s use of vivid colours and Mulligan’s elegant appearance. However, don’t undervalue the energy that recent arrivals like Gladstone and Huller provide, both on stage and in terms of their wardrobe choices.
As a stylist, Austin is attracted to elements like sparkling sequins and fun fringe that give ensembles movement and drama. “These elements create unforgettable fashion moments,” she claims.
Men are also participating in the trend, with evening jackets and embroidered suits taking centre stage alongside traditional tuxedos. Nominees Colman Domingo and Cillian Murphy both have ribbon bowties, which provide a whimsical touch.

Another trending issue is colour. While red is still a favourite colour, pastels and lilacs are losing popularity in favour of a stronger style that looks well on both men and women: colour blocking. Anticipate a burst of surprising colour combinations together with traditional white suits and a dash of “Barbie” pink.
The Oscar red carpet this year is expected to be a stunning exhibition of cutting-edge style, fusing contemporary defiance with classic beauty. Who is going to steal the show? Listen in to learn more!
